Clever Guy

September 12, 2008

Greetings! I am the Normal Typeface, and I will be telling the events of this post in the third person.

Hi! I'm Italics, Normal's slightly inebriated cousin. Although I'm originally from Italy, as my name suggests, I'm not actually from Pisa, although I love the tower they have there. I will be representing Erik's internal thought processes during the telling of events. Back to you, Norm!

The curtain opens.... Erik has received a little television antenna that he wants to hook up to his computer via USB. It has a magnetic base for attaching it to metallic surfaces.

Hmm... I'd like to put this somewhere on my desk so that it isn't blocked by many objects, but also where it's a little hidden. Let's see... Oh! My Macbook Pro is made of metal!

He passes the magnet over every part of his laptop, frustrated that no magnetic tug is felt.

Oh well, I guess I'll set it back on my external hard drive, which is plastic, but at least it's out of the way there.

He puts the antenna, magnet face down, on the external hard drive.

Five minutes pass.

Oh no! You can't put a magnet on top of a hard drive!!

Erik races to remove the antenna!

Due to excellent magnetic shielding engineering and the weakness of the magnet involved, no bits, bytes, kilobytes or kibibytes were injured in this spectacular example of user stupidity.

Whew!
